“Wicked and Irresponsible” — Mr Macaroni Slams Police as Bullet Kills WAEC Student in Ibadan

Popular Nigerian skit maker and activist, Mr Macaroni, has joined the growing chorus of outrage following the tragic death of a WAEC candidate who was reportedly killed by a stray bullet fired by police officers in Ibadan, Oyo State.

According to multiple eyewitness reports, the boy, whose identity was not disclosed at press time, was inside a car being driven by his father when he was hit by the bullet. He was said to be on his way to sit for his West African Examinations Council (WAEC) paper — a crucial milestone for Nigerian secondary school students.

The incident allegedly occurred during a police chase targeting suspected internet fraudsters (popularly known as Yahoo Boys) along Old Ife Road. In their attempt to intercept the suspects, officers reportedly opened fire, resulting in the boy’s tragic death.

Reacting on X (formerly Twitter), Mr Macaroni did not hold back his frustration. In a searing tweet, he described the Nigerian police as “wicked, evil, callous, irresponsible, and shamelessly corrupt,” adding: “@PoliceNG just killed an innocent boy in broad daylight!!! Murderers.”

His comments have since sparked renewed conversations around police brutality and the unchecked use of firearms in civilian spaces.

Social media users, already reeling from the news, flooded the platform with reactions:

@0mobola0duntan questioned, “Who has the legal right to pursue Yahoo boys? The police or EFCC? We’re just getting used to lawlessness.”

@oboy_jay added, “I’m waiting to see the official police statement. And may God help any Yahoo boy they catch today.”

@newslinewrld247 asked in despair, “What kind of country is Nigeria? Why chase fraudsters and shoot blindly among civilians? Are we under a curse?”

@AaJessehalliday commented, “They couldn’t just let go of a free 300k. Without confirming if the suspects were armed or dangerous, they started shooting. It’s always about extortion.”

As of now, the Oyo State Police Command is yet to issue an official statement addressing the allegations or confirming the identities involved.

Meanwhile, Nigerians continue to mourn a young life cut short on what should have been an ordinary school day, another reminder of the deadly cost of unchecked police action.
