Veteran Nigerian actor Yemi Ayebo, popularly known as Yemi My Lover after his 1993 film of the same name, has recounted a chilling encounter from 1996, when a military officer allegedly ordered his execution.

Speaking in a YouTube interview with Mr. LilGaga, Ayebo said the incident occurred under the military government in Lagos State, during the administration of Olagunsoye Oyinlola.

He explained that he was in his office on Lagos Island when four soldiers stormed in and took him to Alausa, Ikeja, claiming he was wanted. There, he met one Major Adeoye, who accused him of a crime he knew nothing about.

“They started beating me, and Major Adeoye asked them to kill me,” Ayebo said. “During the military era, you don’t question them. When they give an order, it must be taken.”

According to him, it took the intervention of one courageous officer and, as he puts it, the mercy of God, to stop the execution. Instead, he was locked up along with five of his staff.

The aftermath, he said, was financially devastating. “I spent over N500,000 before I could come out of the issue. I sold everything I had including my car, house and more,” he revealed. “They later discovered I was innocent. But the issue was my major setback, and since then things have not been the same again.”

Ayebo appealed to the public and Nollywood stakeholders for support in rebuilding his career.
