Zambia’s Former President Edgar Lungu Dies at 68 While Receiving Treatment in South Africa

Zambia is in mourning as former President Edgar Lungu has been confirmed dead at the age of 68, according to a statement from his party, the Patriotic Front, on Thursday, June 5.
Lungu, who ruled Zambia from 2015 to 2021, passed away at 6:00 a.m. in a Pretoria-based clinic in South Africa, where he had been undergoing specialized treatment for an undisclosed illness.
In a somber video released to the public, Lungu’s daughter, Tasila Lungu, confirmed her father’s passing, stating that the former leader had been under close medical supervision in recent weeks.
“In this moment of grief, we invoke the spirit of ‘One Zambia, One Nation’ – the timeless creed that guided President Lungu’s service to our country,” she said.
After losing his re-election bid to current President Hakainde Hichilema in 2021, Lungu initially withdrew from active politics. However, he made a surprise return in recent months, reigniting ambitions for a political comeback before his health declined.
Lungu’s death marks the end of a significant chapter in Zambia’s political history, leaving behind a mixed legacy of leadership, economic challenges, and firm political resolve.
More details to follow as the nation prepares for official mourning.
